Stay hydrated during Ramadan with Life Smoothies!

Stay hydrated during Ramadan with Life Smoothies!

On 2 April, the most important month in the Islamic calendar begins: Ramadan. For thirty days many people of the Muslim faith will fast between dawn and dusk.

Ramadan is the commemoration of the first revelation of the Prophet Muhammad and is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with faith, prayer, almsgiving and the pilgrimage to Mecca. This holy month changes according to the Islamic lunar calendar, and the dates for Ramadan in 2022 are between 2 April and 2 May, corresponding to the crescent moon on the ninth month of the traditional Islamic calendar until the next crescent moon.

As we have mentioned, next month Muslims who are fasting will not eat or drink any food or water from sunrise to sunset. This is very demanding and requires a great deal of physical and mental discipline.

It is important to fast properly in order to avoid ailments or possible complications associated with lack of food and fluid intake during daylight hours. They may only eat before sunrise, a meal known as suhur, and at sunset: a feast known as iftar.

Due to the change in our routines and mealtimes, we must adapt our diet so that this fasting does not have an impact on our day-to-day life, reducing our energy and ability to cope with all the activities we have planned.

During the first meal of the day, the main goal is to rehydrate the body and fully energise it, which is why eating fruit is essential. We already talked to you in our post about pineapple and the benefits of this superfruit, but it is worth pointing it out as one of the best options due to its high vitamin C, protein and mineral content. Milk and dairy products are also one of the most recommended products to start the day.

As for iftar, the feast we share with our friends to end the day, it is not so different from a meal celebrated outside this holy month. It must include complex carbohydrates such as pasta, potatoes, lentils, oats, rice or quinoa, accompanied by animal or vegetable proteins: fish, chicken, lamb, beef, eggs, chickpeas or tofu, for example. Another key food to fill us up both during Ramadan and for your regular diet is vegetables; broccoli, spinach and carrots all contain a high amount of vitamins that will improve our physical well-being.

Life Smoothies, your greatest ally

Our smoothies have therefore become a must during this celebration, as they combine the benefits of milk, fruit and vegetables in a delicious drink that you can enjoy anywhere and is quick and easy to prepare.

  • Refresh’mint: One of our new additions to the smoothies catalogue: an unbeatable combination of avocado, pear, lime, mint and mango.

Beet the Heat: happiness from the very first sip

Beet the Heat: happiness from the very first sip

In this new post we want to introduce you to one of the newest flavours in the Life Smoothies family: Beet the Heat! A very special smoothie and if you stay until the end you will know precisely why. We will tell you all about its ingredients and its nutritional value. However, we must warn you that, if you keep reading, you will want to try it right away!

What is in our Beet the Heat?

This delicious smoothie has very unique but powerful ingredients: pineapple, blueberries, ginger and beetroot. Slightly sweet yet spicy and with an incredible aroma, the ginger packs a punch in this smoothie, giving it a super unique flavour and with the addition of beetroot, the sweet and sour freshness of pineapple and the slightly acidic touch of blueberries.

All our smoothies are perfectly measured and created so that the first sip is a revolution of the senses. And our Beet the Heat is no exception. It is the only one of our smoothies that contains these ingredients, so go ahead and give it a try with a taste unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before!

Beet the Heat: happiness from the very first sip

Happiness, and also healthy, from the very first sip!

As well as great flavour, the two main ingredients are very nutritional in their own right, but when they get together, even better!

It was the Romans who first started to cultivate beetroot, although it seems that its powers were already known to the Greeks, who ate the leaves due to their high nutritional value. Here is a summary of the benefits of this magical plant:

  • Perfect for athletes: Its low glycaemic index helps to keep blood sugar levels stable, releasing it slowly and steadily into the body.
  • If you want to lose weight, beetroot is fat-free and very low in calories.
  • Conditions like anaemia can be improved thanks to the high iron content of this plant, as well as its high vitamin C content, which helps it to be absorbed quickly.
  • It also lowers blood pressure thanks to naturally occurring nitrates.
  • Forget those lotions and potions! Folic acid, known as the “eternal youth” vitamin, helps to maintain healthy nails, skin and hair, due to its rejuvenating effects.
  • It protects your heart and liver due to its antioxidant effects, lowering cholesterol, cleaning arteries and keeping us healthy and strong.

Beet the Heat: happiness from the very first sip

If the beetroot hasn’t won you over yet, then don’t forget the ginger! This superfood has been used in traditional Asian medicine for 2,000 years and is one of the medicinal plants with the greatest health benefits. Here are the main ones:

  • As ginger helps sweating, it is very useful for colds and flus. This is one of its best-known benefits.
  • It helps digestion and strengthens the immune system, thanks to its high vitamin and mineral content.
  • It protects against brain ageing and cognitive decline due to its high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • It helps to combat bad breath, as it acts as a natural astringent, stimulating some digestive processes.

All these benefits make Beet the Heat a super healthy smoothie, which together with the pineapple and blueberries provide a perfect boost of energy and freshness to enjoy this summer.

As you can see, we could spend hours telling you how delicious it is and how beneficial it can be for your body, but the only way to confirm this is to try it! What are you waiting for?

At Life Smoothies we love to share with you how important taking care of yourself is every day by eating the best ingredients. This is why we have compiled a list of our fruits and vegetables. This post could be endless, so today we’re only discussing 3 of them. Keep reading because you’ll be amazed at all the nutrients!

Ginger, one of the most powerful ingredients

Ginger is the superfood you need to kickstart your day with a boost of energy. It is a spice and medicinal plant that has been used in traditional Asian medicine for 2000 years. Its flavour is spicy, peppery and pungent, and slightly sweet if you are a first timer.
The ginger in Beet the Heat is savoured and enjoyed without overpowering the flavour of the other ingredients: pineapple, blueberries, ginger and beetroot. It may seem like a strange mix, but we assure you that it is a winning combination. Every fruit has its role to play in this smoothie, and they play it perfectly! The ginger adds a spicy touch, the beetroot gives us its sweet taste to contrast with the ginger, the sweet and sour freshness of the pineapple and the slight acidity of the blueberries add the finishing touch to this explosion of flavours.
Beet the Heat is a smoothie for discerning palates that are open to new sensory experiences far from the typical, unsurprising flavours, at least for the first few sips.

Dragon fruit, taste one of the most unusual ingredients

Also known as pitaya or pitahaya, it is the fruit of a cactus, which is particularly striking for its purplish-green or yellow skin and its pulp with small seeds. Its skin is thick and fuchsia-coloured, revealing a white inside with black pips that resembles stracciatella. Its name comes from its appearance, as its green stems looks like dragon scales (or a pineapple, but the former is more exotic). It belongs to a family of cacti native to Mexico, which is also found in Brazil and throughout Central and South America, but at Life Smoothies, it comes directly from Vietnam, which is a major producer of this fruit thanks to its climate and favourable soil conditions.

There are two different varieties: the white dragon fruit and the pink dragon fruit. If you are familiar with our smoothie’s intense colour, we don’t need to tell you which variety we chose, do we? Pink Dragon lives up to its name, as it is the star ingredient in this delicious and unique smoothie. Accompanied by mango and strawberry, fruits that everyone loves, the dragon fruit stands out for its unfamiliar and rather unusual taste. It is extremely sweet and can remind us of kiwi or papaya, or even avocado to some extent. Pink Dragon is a bold smoothie full of contrasts, with an explosion of flavours. Give it a go!

Akai Kick smoothie, our defences’ best friend

Last but not least, our star ingredient: acai. If you frequent our blog you will already know a little bit about this “superfood”, but we will never get tired of it. Acai is a small, dark purple fruit from the northern rainforest of Brazil. It is a nutritional treasure and looks very similar to blueberries and grapes. It is a fleshy fruit with a taste that is reminiscent of chocolate.
At Life Smoothies we decided to combine it with banana, mango and blueberries to create our famous Acai Kick. As well as being delicious, this smoothie is perfect for this time of year as we get back to the daily grind after the holidays and our body can take the brunt of it. If your defences need a boost and your taste buds need a treat, try this smoothie and get transported to the Amazon.
